Dogpool Lane is a medium secure mental health unit in Birmingham developed by Montpellier Estates for St Andrews Healthcare. After being commissioned in 2007 to source a location for the new development, Montpellier Estates acquired a 10 acre site at Dogpool Lane in Stirchley. DKS Architects were appointed to design the new development and by 2008 planning permission had been approved.
The new development was built by Bam Construction at a cost of £35 million. The project boasts five buildings consisting of four two storey buildings and one single storey building, covering 28,750 square feet. The completed development delivered 134 en-suite bedrooms for patients with learning disabilities, mental health issues and autistic spectrum disorder. As well as the residential areas the development included a sports hall, an all-weather sports pitch, a fully functioning kitchen and an onsite Café, all set in extensively landscaped gardens.
The aim of the scheme was to deliver medium, low and rehabilitation services all accommodated for on one site, allowing commissioners a pathway for the patients without the disruption of relocation. This practice can be seen through the design of the scheme with each of the five buildings offering varying degrees of mental health care ranging from the main block, which has a medium-security rating, up to the administration building, which houses the offices, catering and admissions offices. The development was completed in January 2009 on time and in budget.
Due to the risk of self-harm all ironmongery supplied to Dogpool Lane was anti-ligature; security and safety for staff and residents was paramount. All locksets were supplied with an override and anti-barricade function to provide clinical staff with all the necessary safety features to address the challenges that can occur on the ward during the course of their working day. All anti-ligature ironmongery was British manufactured in the highest grade of satin stainless steel, ensuring it is extremely robust and fit for purpose. Due to the success of the project Elite were awarded the ironmongery package for St Andrews Healthcare in Mansfield.
