In July 2010, Morriston Comprehensive School was informed that the grant application made to the Welsh Assembly Government by the City and County of Swansea had been successful; the school was awarded funding to the sum of £22 million. Architects Stride Treglown were commissioned to design the refurbishment of Morriston Comprehensive, the plans were to include a new build providing over 10,500sqm of teaching accommodation and a brand new auditorium for school productions and local theatre groups. In addition, a number of the existing buildings were to be refurbished and re-modelled to bring them in line with a 21st Carillion Construction commenced work on the rebuilding of Morriston Comprehensive School in July 2012. The construction was to be completed in two phases to cause as little disruption as possible to the school because it was to remain fully operational. Working around the existing buildings phase one was completed in October 2013 and phase two is expected to be completed by January 2015. External works and landscaping commenced in the autumn of 2014 to enable contractors to leave the site by December 2014.
Elite were chosen to supply the whole ironmongery package to both phases one and two of Morriston Comprehensive School. Elite’s technical expertise and wide range of products meant that we were able to supply a robust package that would cope with the strain the products would be subjected to in a busy school environment. The hardy character of the ironmongery, however, does not detract from its aesthetic design, with clean lines to match the modern interior. Products including pull handles, push plates, door closers, lever handles, locks, panic hardware, signage and protection plates were all chosen from the Elite range.
Along with the ironmongery, Elite were asked to supply the access control system. We decided on Salto’s smart card wireless access system because the battery operated, wireless high security locksets offer many features without any hard wiring. Morriston Comprehensive school sets high environmental targets with a BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’ set out as the objective right from the beginning. The Local Authority plans to use Morriston Comprehensive as its flagship school for environmental standards.
