50 St Mary Axe is a Category A office development located in the heart of the City of London, a prime location in the traditional finance and insurance district close to the iconic Gherkin. The new 32,443 sq ft office development built for Frogmore Real Estate Partners is comprised of a lower ground floor, ground floor and seven upper floors with each floor consisting of 4,500 sq ft of high specification office space. The building was completed in winter 2008 at a cost of £11 million.
Black Architecture were commissioned to design the new office development with the aim to deliver a larger, more efficient floor space than the existing planning consent for the scheme. The new building, built on the site of an old 1980’s office block, incorporates an external facade to ensure the building is in keeping with the adjoining Grade II listed Baltic Exchange. Whilst keeping in tune with the existing buildings St Mary’s Axe is also a contemporary, efficient office space that achieved a BREEAM rating of very good.
